35 universities across Mexico to be powered by Carnegie Mellon software expertise

(Director of Educational Excellence Michael Bridges explains the fundamentals of iCarnegie Software Development Courses to Universidad Tecnológica de México faculty)

On March 1, course developers from iCarnegie  and faculty from
Universidad Tecnológica de México began remote training aimed at providing faculty members with the necessary foundations, training and certifications to gain the skills to teach iCarnegie’s 12 Software Development courses:

Computing and Problem Solving; Application Development; Application Design Choices; Performance, Data Structures & Algorithms; Architecture and Design; Databases and Client/Server Applications; Human/Computer Interaction and Communication; Project Management; Networking and Security; Computer Systems; Managing Technical People; and Personal and Team Processes.

The three-phase project includes training in Foundation Certification (phase 1), Provisional Training Certification (phase 2) and Course Certification (phase 3).

iCarnegie’s Foundation Certification, which began on March 1, focuses on our signature pedagogy, story-centered learning, program architecture and course design. iCarnegie Director of Educational Excellence Michael Bridges explains that this stage gives Universidad faculty the necessary understanding of how we design our courses, so that when faculty advance to phases two and three, they have a better understanding of the “why?”

Provisional Training Certification, beginning on April 16, introduces the specific details of teaching our SDP courses. Faculty will be introduced to the course material, they will be assessed and learn to assess, and they will receive important feedback on their overall progress. All faculty members going through this training are assigned to mentors, who help guide them through the process and evaluate progress and watch for pitfalls.

The final phase, Course Certification (beginning early June) will prepare faculty to become independent teachers of iCarnegie’s SDP courses. This phase includes invaluable teaching practice in which instructors are videotaped, so that iCarnegie staff can see their where they excel and where they are lacking. After analyzing the teachers, iCarnegie can further hone faculty skills by applying our Teaching Excellence program.

When all is said and done, over 850 certifications will be delivered to faculty members in Mexico.

“I’m excited to work with the faculty at Universidad Tecnológica de México and am thrilled to have them as our partner to bring the SDP to Mexico.” – Director of Educational Excellence, Michael Bridges
